Summer has officially started for a lot of colleges (forget about those weird schools on trimesters that get out in the middle of summer). Hopefully you have some plan or something lined up for the summer. No? Here are some ways you can still make the best of your summer.
Actually, you might not be out of luck yet
The New York Times just published an article with tips on how to get those last minute internships that might be still available. You are going to have to look and work hard to get them, but if you actually get one it’s a great thing to have on a resume.
If you don’t have luck finding that last minute internship don’t write off doing any summer work at all. Sure it might be like the jobs you had in high school, but at least you’ll be bringing in some money. It’s probably not going to be a career starter but at least you won’t have an empty gap on your resume - potential employers tend to look down on those.
That being said, take the summer off - sort of
There are a couple of ways to get out of traditional work this summer - classes or building an experience. First and most obviously, classes can be helpful to get caught up if you are a class or two behind and are generally a bit easier in the summer, albeit at a faster pace.
The second is a bit more abstract - if you aren’t going to work or take a class, do something productive with your time. Volunteer, travel, learn new skills and put them to use on your own, freelance, start your own business - these types of things can be beneficial to a resume, but more importantly to yourself and adding to your own life experiences.
Don’t waste your time
Whatever you do this summer, don’t let the days just burn away one-by-one without working or doing something productive - you will regret it and the effort you spend now can pay off in spades later, in one way or another.
